Shirvan District in central Azerbaijan, mainly inhabited by settled Azerbaijanis, associated with excellent quality pile rugs and flatweaves in (mainly geometric) repeating, amulet/ medallion, all-over, banded and striped designs. Colours are either rich or fairly dark shades of red, blue, green, yellow and brown ochre and cream. The two most important styl- istic sub-groups are: Marasali (small, all-over repeating geometric, stylized floral and boteh motifs, often in a striped or prayer-rug format); and Akstafa (repeating amulet- or pole-medal- lions, usually formed from a superimposed cross, diamond and rectangle, which almost invariably feature large, stylized mythical birds, commonly known as the Akstafa bird).
